Investments in Professional Football
In brief
“Football as an investment opportunity is only for oligarchs” – this was the prevailing perception for many years. Football clubs were widely viewed as “trophy assets” that brought glamour but no real returns. However, since the COVID-19 pandemic, both the number and valuation of football-related transactions have skyrocketed. Is the sector now mature enough for institutional investors?
Finding new equity stories
Investors who are over-allocated in business services, tech, and healthcare — and are seeking primary assets with a credible equity story — may find new opportunities in the German professional football sector. This industry is becoming increasingly professionalized, with steadily rising valuations in the United States and the Premier League. A notable example is Invision’s involvement with the player agency Representatives of Outstanding Footballplayers (ROOF). Invision adopted a buy-and-build strategy with ROOF before the pandemic and successfully sold its stake in 2024 to the American United Talent Agency, backed by EQT. The professional football sector presents a promising avenue for investors looking to diversify and achieve growth. Thanks to increasing professionalism and rising valuations in key markets, there is potential for substantial returns. However, as became evident last year during negotiations of a private equity investment directly into the German Football League (DFL), there remains extensive public debate and even resentment. We therefore invite you to our event "DIK Pre - Kick" during the DIK in Frankfurt (Deutsche Investorenkonferenz) on April 1, where we will discuss this topic with René vom Bruch, CEO of ROOF, and Florian Preuss, Partner at Invision. The event will start at 6 pm at Deutsche Bank Park - Possmann Bembel Club (FC Frankfurt stadium). Because seating is limited, please register here.
